Land of Giants Fishing Report – August 3rd, 2017
Land of Giants fishing on the Missouri River continues to be very good. Flows have remained very steady and healthy for this time of year. So the fish are happy and the water is plenty cool to keep things fishing well up here.
We are still seeing some PMD’s most days. Not exactly a prolific hatch by any means. But the fish are eating the nymphs pretty well and you may see a random riser here and there. We are also seeing some tricos buzzing around as well. Caddis come on a little stronger in the afternoon hours as well.
The nymphing has been solid in the mornings. Don’t be surprised if it slows some as the day goes on. Some of our afternoons have been a little bit trickier. The fish are there, but we are having to work for them a little bit more. But plenty of fish are still being landed after lunch.
The callibaetis have been outstanding in the lake. On a calm morning, you will see bugs all over the water and plenty of fish eating them. A size 16 rusty spinner will do the trick for sure. This hatch continues into the early afternoon, on the days with very little wind. So this has been our main focus as of late, instead of nymphing up in the river stretch. The dry fly fishing has just been too good in the lake to pass up.
Expect this hatch to continue through most of August and possibly even into September. Or at least it did last year. But let’s hope.
