I had the opportunity to run down and guide the Yellowstone River over the past few days. The fishing was absolutely ridiculous. Yellowstone River salmon flies were hatching like crazy on the upper river. Even better, the fish were in a frenzy eating them.
There were hundreds of Yellowstone River salmon flies in the air at any given time. They were landing in the boat, landing in the willows and any bug having the misfortune of landing in the water was instantly crushed by a trout waiting below. We were tossing a single dry all day with nonstop action. Our best fly was a Flutterbug. Although I don’t know that it much mattered. They ate most everything we threw out them… easily.
I would expect the fishing to continue to be very good for another few days. We have some extremely hot weather in the forecast for the end of this week and into next week. Multiple days in a row of 100+ degree temps will certainly change a few things. But until this happens, the Yellowstone River salmon flies should continue to hatch and the fishing to be frantic. Get out there while you can. Or contact us if you would like to book a float trip.
